I hope Senator Clinton doesn't mind me borrowing her book title, but the phrase "it takes a village" kept running through my head today as I helped my father-in-law take down a good chunk of siding on the new house. (He pulled off the siding; I pulled nails and stacked wood.) In my case, I was struck by how many people it takes to build a home.
In addition to all the professionals (architect, contractor, subcontractors, tree guys, etc.), so many other friends and family members have already made HUGE contributions to the new house. I joked with my father-in-law today that he and my dad have both put in enough time and sweat to be part owners of the house. Our friend Paul helped pulled down trees. Countless others have provided advice, insight and the benefit of their own experiences in remodeling and home building.
But beyond all those people who have gotten dirty and sweaty with us, are the "unsung heroes" who help to make it all happen. Today, my hero was my cousin Katie. With Stu out of town this weekend, Katie came over to watch the kids so that I could go over to the house to get the siding down before major demolition starts this week. Thank you Katie!
We are both so thankful for all the help we've received already...and for the help we will likely need over the next seven months.
If everything stays on track this week, we should be able to post some dramatic demolition pictures soon...so, stay tuned!
